After the 2019-20 bushfire season, conservationists and scientists warned that if logging continues in Australia, more wildfires will erupt in the future and ecosystems will collapse. Yet, Victoria state’s logging industry has gotten back to work.
Victoria’s local government has promised that logging in native forests will end by 2030, but conservationists believe that the ecosystems will collapse if logging continues for another 10 years. Scientists have also found links between the recent bushfires and deforestation. Additionally, logging makes forests more vulnerable. Thus, they become increasingly likely to catch fire.
Experts claim that plantation logging is a solution to native forest clearances. However, loggers can also be retrained as full-time firefighters. This is a very good idea, as climate change is likely to make bushfires more frequent and severe in Australia, creating a need for well-trained firefighters.
