Since the coronavirus outbreak, Madagascar has lost half a billion dollars in tourism revenue. Many of these funds would have gone to conservation areas and projects that rely on them to survive.
International funding makes up the majority of conservation efforts financial support. These are now at risk as well, as donors face economic hardship in the form of national economic crisis’ and dealing with the pandemic itself.
The loss in revenue could slow down conservation initiatives and cause unsustainable exploitation of timber, water, biodiversity and other natural resources. Local communities may also suffer as they become poorer without any conservation funding.
