Major Supermarket Chain Pledges to Scrap 50% of Plastic Packaging

Aldi, a major German supermarket chain, has pledged to scrap more than 2bn single-use plastic items by 2025. That is a 50% reduction and 74,000-ton decrease in plastic packaging used in all of Aldi's stores.

Aldi has claimed that they will achieve their goal by removing unnecessary plastic packaging and switching to alternative materials. The supermarket chain is also planning on making all their own products recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2022, while branded goods sold at Aldi will have until 2025 to comply with this commitment. Consequently, all plastic that remains in-store must at the very least be recyclable within 5 years. Some of the plastic used should also come from recycled materials.

Aldi introduced its plastic reduction strategy in March 2018. Since then the supermarket has removed over 6000 tonnes of plastic packaging and replaced more than 3000 tonnes of unrecyclable material with recyclable alternatives.
