Researchers Find Millions of Microplastics on the Sea Floor

Updated: May 29, 2020

Researchers have found microplastics on the sea floor that were carried by bottom currents to specific spots in the ocean known as ‘microplastic hotspots’. These areas contain 1.9 million pieces of plastic per square meter. This is the largest concentration of plastic to be recorded on the sea floor.

The researchers discovered that the most common microplastics in the hotspots were microfibers from textiles. These enter the ocean through either industrial or domestic waste water systems. On a personal level, you can stop this by not using or purchasing textiles made from fossil fuels. However, if you already have these fabrics at home, don’t throw them away! Purchase a microplastic bag and put your laundry in it when you wash. This stops microplastics from going into the water. The fabrics to avoid/wash with a microplastic bag include polyester, nylon, acrylic and spandex.

According to the study the researchers produced, microplastics that reach biodiversity rich areas in the ocean disrupt the marine environment. The plastic also threatens marine life as animals may perceive it as food.
