Sharks are Given a Chance to Recover in Indonesia

Updated: May 29, 2020

A national lockdown and export restrictions have been imposed in Indonesia, as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. This has caused a massive decline in demand of sharks within the country.

In West Nusa Tenggara province, one of the world's largest sellers of sharks, demand has fallen by 68% since the beginning of the year.

Indonesia has the greatest diversity of sharks worldwide. Loopholes in the law allow illegal exports of protected species and it is legal to capture some endangered species.
