64,000 Endangered Turtles Flock to Island in Great Barrier Reef

64,000 endangered green turtles have flocked to Raine Island in the Great Barrier Reef to nest. The turtles were counted after a new drone video caught them swimming ashore. The Raine Island Recovery Project has now begun to restore beaches on the island to ensure that the green turtles can nest safely.

There has been an increase in nesting turtles worldwide this season. This is most likely due to conservation efforts and fishing moratoriums, which have helped protect and preserve endangered turtles. However, turtles still face threats from plastic pollution and fishing gear left in the ocean. Action is therefore still needed to eliminate these problems and ensure the safety of endangered turtle species.
